Know Your Pressure
South Western Ambulance Service and The Stroke Association are working in partnership to help combat high blood pressure, the single biggest risk factor for stroke. Each year around 150,000 people across the UK experience a stroke; 40% of stokes caused by a blood clot could be prevented by the timely identification and treatment of high blood pressure.
High blood pressure often shows no symptoms. There is no way of knowing that you have high blood pressure apart from having it measured so many people are completely unaware that they have it. Studies have shown that around four fifths of men and two thirds of women with high blood pressure are not being treated. High blood pressure puts a strain on blood vessels all over the body, including vital arteries to the brain. The excess pressure can damage the lining of an artery, allowing blood clots to form which may then cause blockages. The extra strain may also cause blood vessels to burst and lead to bleeding in the brain. On Saturday 17th April the Trust are organising 30 Know your Blood Pressure (KYBP) events at supermarkets across the South West, working in conjunction with local healthcare providers. The events will provide an opportunity to have your blood pressure checked by a health professional. Measuring blood pressure takes just a few minutes, but it could help to save your life. Your pulse will be taken to check for atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm that may increase your risk of experiencing a stroke. Whilst you are at the event, you will also be shown the Face, Arm, Speech (FAST) test, a simple test that will help you recognise someone who may be experiencing a stroke.
